Mission Bay Lure Recommendations

Caveat: These aren't the only types of lures that will catch fish. These are not the only places in Mission Bay to catch bass. These are proven areas and lures under normal (most) conditions.

With that said - click on the little map to your left and take a look. I've outlined my favorite areas and lure combinations with the little markers.

All of these lures can be read about in some more detail - including a few specific recommendations for colors, styles or sizes in the "My Favorite Lures for Mission Bay".

I've only documented the front half of the bay - I don't fish the back bay enough to have formed solid favorites in those areas. Anyone who does have that experience is more than welcome to finish this off for me! Or wait a couple years and I'll get there. :)

Following this map out on the water and practicing in these areas will show you why I chose the particular lures for any given area. It's a pretty straight forward scenario - heavy grass in shallow water = spinnerbaits and weedless rigs. Docks and heavy vertical structure lend themselves to dropping small baits (grubs) on pilings or pitching a spinner bait back inside the slip and rolling it under the dock back to the boat.

A few areas have jetties or rock piles - I like to throw a weedless rig up against those rocks or in heavy grass and work it like some kind of delicious little creature looking for escape. Crankbaits work well in moderately weedy areas or clean areas and any depth betwee 9-16' roughly. Again - this isn't the Bible of how/where to fish but it should give you a head start. Good luck!
