J St, Chula Vista Launch Site

J St. is where the Plastic Navy got it's start with hosting kayak fishing tournaments. The first Money Between Friends, a $5 jackpot, was held here in 2003. A nice part area with clean restrooms and good picnic facilities, it's located just north of the marina. Fishing here can be really hot but the wind tends to show up in the afternoons and the location is usually blown out by lunch time.

Parking
If you don't arrive early you may not find a spot. The park is popular on weekends and can fill up quickly. On summer weekends you'll sometimes find a line of people waiting to enter the park at 6am. Arriving early is always the best policy and most days you won't have a problem.

Fishing Description

Fish can be found almost everywhere, here. This area of San Diego Bay is mostly a giant 12' deep flat with occasional plant growth. The spotties tend to move around in large schools and finding a few fish usually means finding a lot of fish. There is a channel and the edges of it are productive.

Halibut hunters like the wide open flats and the small channels as they provide excellent foraging grounds for the flat ones. Halibut up to 50# have been taken from the areas in the south bay.

Cornado Cays is located directly across the bay and the docks there can provide some excellent structure fishing as well.

Small plastics and crankbaits are key - there are more short fish than anything in these areas. Bonefish and corvina are not uncommon here - hold on tight!
