Malibu Kayaks X-Factor Fishing Kayak Review

Answers provided by Steve Preslar

1. How long have been fishing the X-Factor?

I bought my X-Factor before they were even released to the general public in November of 2004. I picked up a demo model from Rick at the Sailing Center.

2. Why did you choose this boat?

I bought this boat because my wife let me. Just kidding. Well not really. That is part of it, but the real reason is I needed a good stable platform to fish from. I wanted something that had enough space to carry one of the four kids I have go out fishing with me, and still be practical for me to fish alone from.

3. Have you owned other boats? Which? In what order? Discuss your progression to the eXtreme.

My first kayak was a Cobra Fish N' Dive. I sold it because I wanted something bigger so I could take the kids out fishing with me. So my second kayak which I still own is Malibu Pro2 Tandem. My third kayak is you guessed it the X-Factor.

4. What are the tradeoffs of this kayak?

I would have to say that the tradeoff for the X-Factor is the weight. This thing just seems to feel really heavy out of the water. If you are going to move this thing any real distance you will need a good set of wheels. It just gets even more difficult to move once you add all of the necessities for fishing. The X-Facor has a bigger profile then most kayaks and I have noticed that on a windy day that you do tend to get blown about fairly easy.

5. What are the strengths of this kayak?

If you are looking for a stable kayak this kayak is for you. If weight is not an issue that is. You would really have to try and roll this kayak. I have never really felt like I was going to roll out of it. Getting the X-Factor up to speed it also not difficult to achieve. I have noticed that I can keep up with almost any model without a problem. Also this kayak tracts very nicely. Point and paddle. There is not a whole lot of course correction.

6. What is the one thing that keeps it above the rest in your mind?

This is my boat. It is the one that I feel most comfortable in. I like that fact that I can take it out on a day when I can't find a buddy to fish with, and I feel 100% safe.
